Guntur Kaaram Movie Review: A Stale and Tedious Outing for Mahesh Babu

Guntur Kaaram is the latest Telugu outing featuring superstar Mahesh Babu, who has teamed up with writer-director Trivikram Srinivas for the third time after the hits Athadu and Khaleja. However, their newest collaboration is a stale rehash of earlier films lacking in freshness or novelty.

Mahesh Babu stars as Venkata Ramana Reddy or Ramana, who has a bitter relationship with his estranged mother, the steely politician Vasundhara (Ramya Krishna). Vasundhara abandoned Ramana when he was a child, which left deep wounds. The drama unfolds when Vasundhara’s father and political mentor Viswanadham (Prakash Raj) wants Ramana to sign papers severing all ties with the family. But Ramana seeks long-awaited answers first.

The premise hints at some raw emotions regarding the strained mother-son dynamic. Mahesh Babu also puts in an earnest performance. However, the writing fails to offer any depth or nuance to the other characters. Ramya Krishna, Prakash Raj, and Jayaram feel underutilized despite being gifted performers. Even the leading ladies Sreeleela and Meenakshi Chaudhary are saddled with hollow parts lacking agency.

None of the characters register any real impact besides Mahesh Babu. The narrative is also punctuated with insensitive remarks mocking Prakash Raj’s age. And the perpetually dull visual palette adds to the tedious viewing experience.

The film fails as an emotional family drama given the weak writing. And the action sequences bring nothing novel to the table either, lacking Trivikram’s usual spark. The songs and background score work occasionally, but the uninspired direction negates all potential.

Guntur Karam is still a step up from Trivikram’s previous disaster Agnyaathavaasi featuring Pawan Kalyan. But just about. The film lacks the appeal of well-balanced mainstream entertainers starring Mahesh Babu like Athadu or Khaleja. Despite earnest efforts from the leading man, stale writing makes Guntur Karam one of the most boring films of Mahesh Babu’s storied career. The fiery Guntur chillies fail to spice up this rehashed dish that offers nothing fresh or exciting. This outing will appeal only to the most die-hard fans of the star.
