Ayalaan Movie Review
Ayalaan is an ambitious foray into science fiction for Tamil cinema centering around an alien named Tattoo who lands on Earth and befriends average youngster Shakthi (Sivakarthikeyan). When the well-meaning alien gets captured by villains wanting to exploit its powers, Shakthi bands together with his wacky friends and Tattoo to thwart the baddies’ destructive plans.
Ayalaan Movie Review
Director R Ravikumar blends the alien storyline with all the usual commercial masala elements to appeal to mainstream audiences. There are songs, comedy, emotions, and romance topping the science fiction core. The first half establishes the characters and their dynamics, while the second half delivers mass elements culminating in a clash between good and evil.
Ayalaan Movie Review
The film rests heavily on visual effects to realize the alien Tattoo, who is voiced brilliantly by Siddharth. The VFX works for most part, with the alien feeling expressive and lifelike. Sivakarthikeyan also puts up a likeable performance as the hero who shares an endearing bond with the alien.
But despite tacking on mass elements, the screenplay sticks to sci-fi film clichés without offering anything new storywise. Some scenes also feel disjointed and the romance track featuring Rakul Preet Singh is not well integrated.
Ayalaan Movie Review
The songs are hummable with Anirudh’s background score elevating the tension. Comedy from Yogi Babu and Karunakaran works in parts. Isha Koppikar and Sharad Kelkar are apt as scheming villains wanting to misuse Tattoo’s powers for their own benefit.
On the whole, Ayalaan is a fairly engaging sci-fi entertainer that balances genre elements with commercial factors to appeal to the mainstream. It could have been tighter plotwise and the disconnect is evident in parts. But the feel-good emotional core centered on Shakthi and Tattoo’s unlikely friendship makes Ayalaan a fun one-time watch for the family. It ultimately delivers decent bang for your buck despite the bumps.
