An overview of Swati Maliwal, the former DCW chief, who the AAP has nominated to the Rajya Sabha 2024

Three nominees have been finalized by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the next Rajya Sabha elections. For the first time, the party has put forward Swati Maliwal, the former head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). She left her position as DCW chief after being nominated.

A second term in the Upper House of Parliament was proposed for the other two candidates, Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta. Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi and national convener of the AAP, presided over the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting that announced the nominations.

Maliwal presided over the Delhi Commission for Women in that capacity. After receiving an AAP nomination for the Rajya Sabha, she tendered her resignation as DCW chief. She vigorously promotes social justice and women’s rights. Maliwal has been linked to a number of campaigns and movements that support gender equality, call for tougher legislation, and fight violence against women.

The youngest person to occupy the position was Maliwal. She previously served as the chief minister of Delhi’s advisor on public grievances. Her leadership in initiating campaigns to tackle problems like acid attacks, sexual harassment, and women’s safety in Delhi has been crucial.

According to the Hindustan Times, Maliwal was also a key player in the Indian Against Corruption movement, having joined at a younger age than most of the other members led by Arvind Kejriwal and Anna Hazare. Naveen Jaihind, the leader of the AAP, was her husband. Their divorce was finalized in February of 2022.
